Why do we come to International Association of Movers conventions or any other conventions for that matter? There are many interesting insights and motives for attending a convention that are rarely shared. As an industry supplier and non drinking introvert that operates on a strict diet and sports schedule, conventions represent a huge challenge to me and yet I’ve been attending International Association of Movers, Latin American Association and FIDI Global Alliance for the past 20 years. None of the usual “relationship fostering activities” apply as I stopped forcing myself to engage in something I’m not genuine at very long time ago. And yet we've never ponder whether we will have a booth at IAM. When IAM had a virtual convention, we took part in it and suffered horribly because it didn't feel right. At first, it was a matter of business necessity - how else would the industry learn about us? Then as our products gained traction, the reasons for coming became different and rather blatant - existing and potential clients simply wanted to see that we have a booth, have no reason to hide from outraged clients, look reasonably healthy and have a budget for all this travel, booth staff and exhibiting. Let’s admit it - an attention span at a convention is at an all time low. Self aware people know it and avoid in-depth business dealings when they are rushing around. In our case people come to the booth mostly to just rest, exchange a hug, a couple of crude jokes and move on. Real detailed conversations typically happen online after the convention shock wears off. That's how it is for us and the guilt of a carbon footprint of our travel is wiped by looking at a "carbon footprint" tax in the Air Canada invoice;) We ran the stats on the conversion of unplanned booth foot traffic to sales - no sane person would justify the expense by looking at this less than underwhelming performance. Interestingly, some of these visitors become clients years later after saying that they don’t need a demo because they saw it at such and such convention;) Funny enough, meaningful conversations with true friends or sometimes with total strangers do happen sporadically at places like gym or hallway or coffee shops in the early hours when jet leg victims or early risers turn up. I guess, at the end of the day we deal with people that accept our products and services, which represent who we are at our core. An industry insider whom I deeply respect confirmed this point of view. Some of us need to have a drink in their hand to attain this state of “real” with other people and some have to have enough caffeine or endorphins in their bloodstream. I guess Oscar Wilde’s saying “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken” is dead accurate. So when you come to our booth 200 at IAM this year, do it with a 100% confidence that you are getting an uncensored and unpolished version of Kreynin brothers. See you in November.
